Chapter 7 - Tobias

…………

"I saw the island you mentioned."

"How?" Nathanos came to his senses and looked at the mage's side face. Merriel's concentration on the southern end of the map just now made him vaguely guess the answer.

Merriel said in a slightly surprised tone: "In fact, it is not an island, it should be said to be a continent, a continent surrounded by heavy fog, at the southernmost point of Azeroth."

“What’s on land?”

"I only saw a group of panda people, which should be their home, a vibrant atmosphere."

"How far?" Nathanos asked the most critical question.

"I flew for five days before I saw it, but the most troublesome thing was not the distance, but the fog." The mage shook his head and decided to take Nathanos to witness it himself. His staff knocked on the ground. A dazzling light burst out from the end of Etiyes' staff, and then the Withered One found himself standing on a sea. But he could not feel the sea breeze or hear the sound of waves.

"Look!" Merriel pointed ahead.

When Nathanos looked over, he was also shocked by the strange scene. A fog of unknown origin almost wrapped around his vision ahead. Although the sun was shining, the fog did not disappear. It looked like a storm, but there was no sign of spreading.

"This is by no means a natural phenomenon," said Nathanos. "You said that continent is just behind the fog."

Merriel nodded, "I almost wanted to give up, but fortunately, with magic, I can always point me in the direction, and it took me a long time to find the destination."

"So, the use of this fog is to prevent outsiders from approaching the land inside?" The Withered tone joked, "It really gave me a problem. Forget it, as long as there is a certain location." With a wave of his hand, Merrell's fantasy disappeared instantly, "Now I want to start with what I see."

"what you up to?"

"Be prepared to go to that continent, I will do one more thing before that." Nathanos gave Merriel an unpredictable smile. The mage frowned sensitively.

………

A goshawk flapped his wings and flew high across the gloomy sky.

Tobias Mistermanto glanced at the landscape, jumped over a low and rough city wall, and stopped on the top of the wall for a moment, carefully examining the surrounding situation. The high wall of Gilnis was like a mountain covered with dark curtains, guarding and isolating its kingdom. Although the twilight made the glance look a little mist, the city walls and mountains were integrated, as if they were growing in this mountain. Looking at the city, many towers shone together, and the dome of the main tower could clearly reflect the reflections of the lower-level residential houses.

This scene was not the first time that it had caught his eye. A day ago, he glanced at the city wall at the west gate of the city. Frankly speaking, this was simply a miracle created by witchcraft in a Jedi, the masterpiece of the Gilnis craftsmen!

He sat down to make sure that he would not be found and could observe pedestrians on the streets and alleys. His eyes saw many people, and the residents were still running around in daily life. This was very good, at least it showed that the Gilnes did not fall into fear because of the shadow of the kingdom.

Thinking of this, Tobias began to hate him a little, disgusted with him. His eyes glanced slightly at the water under his feet. He did not see his face clearly from the corner of his eyes, but the gray hair reflected on the water almost immediately made him furious.

He realized, countless times: This is not a nightmare, it is true, he has become a monster.

...

There was not even a ghost on the battlement, as if it had been abandoned, only the howling wind rushed past the snow. The king sent most of the soldiers to patrol the streets. After staying for a while, Tobias felt extremely hungry. He took out the hard bread that had been prepared and clean water, and ate it alone, while thinking. At this time, the patrol guards should come to his house to check--the reason why the king did this was to ensure the safety of the people. During the day on weekdays, he would stay at home calmly and open the door for the soldiers, but it was not possible at night, and he could not control his entire change.

The chewing process made Tobias feel a little hated. His mouth was stretched, the sound of dozens of sharp teeth rubbing was quite harsh, and his claws and limbs were strong and powerful. When he swallowed a bite of bread, Tobias only felt the dissatisfaction from his stomach. Compared to grains, meat was what he needed. He shook his head in a hurry and suppressed his inner desire. This was very dangerous, which only showed that he was becoming more and more like a wild beast.

After a long time, it was estimated that the guards had finished their inquiries with the citizens. Tobias threw away the shriveled water bag, breathed a sigh of relief, and looked down at the city wall. His legs were pressing hard, and his whole body drew an arc in the air and swooped down towards the tower below. If he was still a human, such behavior would be like suicide, but now he has changed. At the moment of landing, he felt his body full of strength, and even stomped on the ground with his feet. Then, his body leaned forward, on all fours, and shuttled through the city of Gilness under the twilight.

The sound of the wind was still filled with his ears, but Tobias felt something was happening! It was the sound of the arrows leaving the string in an instant? He turned sideways and quickly twisted his body. A bow and arrow flew past his eyes, and the sharp arrow almost scratched the bridge of his nose!

Tobias immediately looked towards the direction of the bow and arrow, and nothing was left. The attacker hid. He gritted his teeth. No matter who the other party was, he had been discovered. He wanted to leave here immediately. If the king's scout found him, everything would be done. Tobias simply did not hear anyone shouting loudly to give an alarm. He was a little puzzled, why did the other party not do this?

After turning around, Tobias entered the complex alleys of Gilness. The tall buildings provided him with the safest cover, and no matter how superb the other party's archery skills were, they would be useless.

After stabilizing slightly, he shuttled through the familiar surroundings at an extremely fast speed. He was safe when he got home. The road was not too far, but Tobias always felt a little unsafe.

It turned out that his idea was correct. When there was only one turn left to leave home, his way forward was undoubtedly intercepted. Now he saw clearly who was attacking him. The man was wearing a black cloak, his armor was light and defensive. He hung a short sword on his belt, holding a longbow in both hands, and an arrow was already set up.

This is not the Gilness dress. Tobias thought carefully. In Gilness, even a hunter could only use guns, and bows and arrows were not popular here.

Under the black cloak, Tobias couldn't see the other person's appearance, but the pointed ears exposed in the hood made him confirm the other person's identity - the elf! No! The enhanced sense of smell due to his own changes told him that things might not be that simple, a smell of decay, with the breath of death.

Just as he wanted to speak, the elf's voice had already sounded, and it sounded as cold as her identity: "Look at what you look like, it's really a surprise."

Tobias then realized that he was no longer a human appearance. He originally wanted to change back after returning home. "The remnants of the Scourge? Is it here?" His voice sounded very strange, and it was rough and hard, which made him very uncomfortable.

"You can talk?" The elf was a little surprised.

Now Tobias's second secret was also exposed.

"I heard that the werewolf curse can only make people crazy and lose their minds, but obviously you look normal. Can you tell the reason?"

"It has nothing to do with you!" Tobias growled, and for a moment he sounded more like an animal than a human. He stepped closer to the blocker, as if he was going to attack.

"I think we'd better not make too much noise," the other party said. "In two minutes, a team of patrol soldiers will pass through here."

This sentence made Tobias brow raise his eyebrows. He couldn't do it here. Maybe he could kill this "invader", but it would waste a lot of time and cause a commotion.

"There is another point, I'm not a Scourge. My name is Veronara, a Forsaken."

Tobias had never heard of the Forgotten, he could only sigh that Gilness had been isolated from the world for too long.

"By the way, guess why do I know you're passing here?" Veronara smiled slightly. As the patrol guards' footsteps became clearer, she jumped onto the roof of the civilian dormitory on the left in a few seconds. "We will meet again, Tobias Mistermanto, I hope you are mentally prepared for the change of this kingdom."

...

Memories were dispersed by a cool and soothing wind, which blew past the tall oak trees in the black miasma forest, and peacefully arrived in this quiet forest, leaving behind the lonely thoughts of Tobias Mistermanto. Although food has been insufficient for the past few weeks, Tobias was still unwilling to give up. Compared to the cold and cramped whole Gilness, the dark miasma forest was much more gloomy.

The war never disappeared in this kingdom, and the sound of artillery fire was as familiar as one's breath. The royal city fell completely because of werewolf not long ago, and the tribe took the opportunity to occupy a large area of Gilness' territory. The black miasma forest, which the Gilness people did not want to approach, became a refuge for refugees and a base for the rebels.

"I'm looking for you, Mistermanto." A companion of Tobias came over. Many werewolfs who had recovered their sanity had accepted their changes. The one who spoke to him was one of them. Lord Dalius Crore was once the commander of the rebels of the North Gate, and now he has surrendered to the king and is responsible for staying in Gilness. Crore's werewolf form still had the iconic beard, his neat brown hair was slightly gray, but his sharp eyes showed that his energy was similar to that of a young man.

"What are the instructions, lord?" asked Tobias.

"I had a fight with Iva just now. He insisted on regaining the Greymann Manor. He said that with his dangerous terrain and geographical location, the tribes occupying the royal city will be attacked from both sides. What do you think?"

The leader of the wolf pack, Iva Blood-Tooth, was an adjutant of Crore. He had an elite unit called Blood-Tooth Werewolf. Before surrender, Iva caused great trouble to the tribe. After surrender, he was also committed to guarding his homeland, but those who are familiar with him knew that he was a hurry and prone to impulsive behavior.

"His vision is not without reason, but there is no way out for Greymann Manor. Once the tribe discovers it, we will be in danger."

Crore nodded and then sighed, "It's a pity that he has set out. In his eyes, any risk is worth taking."

Tobias blinked and witnessed Crore turning and leaving.

...

"Where did you go, I waited for a few hours."

When he got home, Tobias found someone waiting in the house.

"Sorry, Stavin. I just went out and walked away." As he said that, he closed the curtains to prevent the moonlight from sprinkling in to cause reactions in his body. It is easy to turn from a human to a werewolf, but it is not easy to turn back.

"What do you think about my plans?" Stavin asked suddenly, obviously this was the reason why he appeared and was waiting for Tobias to come back.

Tobias stood there for a while, trying to recall what his brother was planning, and then he thought of the last time the two of them had talked.

"I thought that was just your joke."

In a blink of an eye, Tobias could see the disappointed expression on Starvin's face. "I don't say a big deal. I plan to smuggle out by fishing boats going out."

"Are you crazy?" Tobias hurriedly grabbed Stavin, fearing that he would slip away in the next second. "This is an infeasible act. The king explicitly prohibits anyone from leaving Gilness."

"King? Gene Greymann is nothing!" Stavin struggled to break free from Tobias's shackles. "Look at what he did? He blocked us behind a high wall and summoned monsters to hurt us..."

The bitter taste entangled Tobias's heart, and the word "monster" in his relatives was even more of a nightmare that he could not escape. If I showed what I had just seen in front of him, what would he do? Tobias immediately erased this terrible idea, defended himself for the king, and said: "The werewolf is summoned to resist the Scourge. We succeeded, and we did something that even Lordaeron could not do."

"You mean to exchange one enemy for another? Don't be stupid anymore, Tobias. Think about how big a disaster the werewolf has brought to us, think about it!" Stavin pushed him away and left angrily.

The tension did not disappear because of Stavin's departure. Tobias clearly felt that there was still a consciousness. He sat on the floor in pain, controlling his urge to transform with his will.
