Chapter 19 - Change
…………
It took time to get from the plague land of Quel'thalas, longer than Aurelia imagined. A small team she led only stayed at the gate of the South Wall for one night. The Regent almost never sleeps and only ate some food made with magic. After enduring it for two days, she finally arrived at the Maris Farm. During this period, she found all the information about what happened on the farm that year, but because she had personally ordered the erasure of all traces of Nathanos, she could get very little information. It was not until this time that Aurelia realized that her husband only existed in her memory.
The ruins in front of her touched the Regent's heart, and the battle that happened here many years ago is still vivid in my mind. She sighed, hoping that she was ready to face reality.
"You go around to watch, and no one is allowed to get close!"
After dispersing the entourage, Aurelia slowly walked towards the collapsed building, recalling that she had met Nathanos here and shared joy with his family on the night of the Winter Day. That past time was one of the few that she deserved nostalgia.
Just one bone.
Aurelia did not ask that so many years have passed, and countless ups and downs, Nathanos's body can be preserved intact. She only needs to find a bone. She believes that this will prove that her husband is indeed resting in peace and that all the rumors will be broken.
The Regent stepped on one piece of building remains and came to the highest point, and his uneasy heart shook for a moment. Her expression gradually dimmed.
The ruins here have been searched!
"This is impossible!" she whispered in a nearly hoarse voice: "Who is it?"
"It seems you have hidden a lot of things from me, Mother."
Aurelia turned around and had enough things to upset her, but the person who appeared in front of her completely tore open the long-clogged wound.
"Belorel?" Aurelia called out, and she saw her son's originally delicate and soft hands being unrecognizable, with many small scratches and some wood chips thorned in the flesh and blood. The Regent was wondering who had moved the ruins here one step ahead of her, and now she knew the answer.
The elf boy strode towards his mother, raising a hand to let his closest relative see clearly. "I arrived yesterday, did what you wanted to do, and got the answer you still doubted."
"Answer?" Aurelia repeated, "I don't need any answer. I'm here just to confirm a rumor that is not true. But you, you sneak out again. Do I have to send an army to watch you?"
"Are you still going to hide it from me until now?" Belorel snarled.
Aurelia stayed in place, shocked by her son's words.
"I didn't hide anything from you, child. I just don't want you to know the painful memories of the past."
“Who is Nathanos Maris?”
This question made Aurelia realize that she had miscalculated the situation. The problem now is not that she didn't tell Belorel what she had told Belorel, but that Belorel already knew something.
"Belorille," Aurelia tightened her body, and the words came out of her tightly closed teeth, "How could you know this name?"
The elf boy raised his head and stared at her with a terrible gaze. He, who had been kept in the dark, asked his soul: "Is my last name Windrunner or Marys?"
"Of course you are the child of the Wind Walker family, Belorel." Aurelia responded loudly. She shouldn't have appeared here. The female elf regretted it. She just wants to take Belorel home now... "I know you have always been curious about who your father is, but you have to accept the facts like me. Your father... is dead and he is no longer here."
"Really? Do you remember what you said? Have you forgotten that you said you let your father be free from the dead body with your own hands?"
Belorel's accusation shocked Aurelia. The secret that the Regent had always wanted to hide had been known to the person she wanted to protect the most.
"You are just deceiving yourself. The most unchangeable fact is the truth." Bellorel turned his head in pain, "No wonder you kept telling me that the undead are all abominable creatures, and that they almost destroyed our homeland. I always thought you were right...but how could you do it?"
Aurelia jumped out of the ruins and came to her son, and took his scarred hand with cares. Her worries turned into heartache. In her heart, there was a huge, incurable wound. "It was not what you thought, you didn't see it with your own eyes. You were just born at that time. You don't know, you don't know what your father has become. I can't look at him..."
"Of course I know!" Belorel shook Aurelia's hand vigorously. This sentence made his mother look at him in surprise. "I saw with my own eyes. I saw a dead soul survived from this ruin. He shouted to the sky, 'I'm still alive'. I saw his eyes scarlet, as scary as from hell. His voice had both the joy of survival and anger that I could not understand at the time. Now I understand, I know who his anger came from, not only those who turned him into the dead, but also those who abandoned him!"
In an instant, Belorel noticed that the last line of defense in his mother's heart had collapsed. His heart also beat faster and faster. In his eyes, his mother was definitely not a ruthless person. She would swear to guard Quel'thalas and would give everything to protect her children. No matter what choice she made, it might not be her fault. He believed that when his mother faced her father who had become a dead father, she would be very painful and desperate. Belorel deeply sympathized with his mother, and he wanted to apologize for what he had just said.
"Did you... see?" Aurelia asked with a trembling voice. Belorel's words sounded absurd, but he could not lie. Aurelia didn't believe that her children would deceive her.
"I saw it. I saw it with my own eyes."
As if she had suffered a heavy blow, Aurelia staggered back a few steps. She clearly knocked down Nathanos, but was still cremating in his homeland...
"The last time I came here, I encountered an attack from the undead. Although she did not identify herself, I investigated all known undead camps, and in addition to the accident of the Scourge, there was also a power of undead called the Forgotten."
Forgotten? Aurelia's legs were limp and she fell on the barren land beneath her feet. Her brain was confused and incredibly painful.
Vendel’o eranu, let me forget. Is that what it means?
Nathanos...
I am here to find you, my love is to help you... be liberated.
After seeing him, she once told him this. She cried for Nathanos's change.
I did not become the minion of the Lich King, I had my own will, I was different from the undead natural disasters that destroyed Quelsellas. Why do you want to destroy me like those monsters?
Then what is the difference between you and Alsace? He killed his father, you killed his mother! I... don't want to see you like this. Belloril doesn't want to see you either.
Slowly, it seemed as if her heart weighed a thousand pounds.
Aurelia?
Sorry, Nathanos. I can't watch you live like this.
"My father is still alive."
Belorel's voice made her heart tight. The Regent stood up slowly, swallowed hard, raised her tear-stained face and looked at Belorel, and squeezed out a few words from his throat: "I will investigate clearly. The fact that your father is still alive may not be good news for us. You are right, part of his anger comes from me. If he wants to seek revenge, I will not blame him, I just hope that he will hurt me one is enough."
"I don't want you to be hurt, mother," said Belorel. "I hope you can have a good talk with your father. The Lich King has been defeated for many years, and some of the dead have long recovered their will. The Knights of the Black Front are the best examples."
"Maybe you are right, child." Aurelia held Belorel's hand tightly, "Maybe my choice was wrong, and the consequences were most likely to be borne by the whole Quel'thalas." Despite expressing her thoughts, she felt a little uncomfortable when she saw the sad expression on Belorel's face.
"Then what are you going to do next, mother?" Bellorel asked softly.
"It is unreasonable that your father has been hiding for so many years, and suddenly he was found." Aurelia calmed down. "I know Nathanos. He wants to test everyone's opinions with the news that he is still alive, and guessed that I will spread this fact."
"Why?" Belloril asked in confusion, "if more people know that their father is still alive, then his enemies will definitely try their best to destroy him."
"You don't understand, Belorel. Is your father giving us a choice to continue hiding or exposing his existence. We choose the former, which is equivalent to choosing to be an enemy of him." Aurelia thought of almost all possible situations, "The Forgotten conquered the Fortress not long ago, which proves that they have good military power. Nathanos's assemblage of such an army must have been the result of years and years. He has been hiding, and now, he no longer needs to hide."
Speaking of this, Aurelia and Belorel were both nervous at the same time. What is the reason why Nathanos no longer hides? What is his goal to expose his identity? Is he trying to intimidate those who failed him? If so, Aurelia firmly believes that he will succeed and he will scare everyone.
………
A few days of rest finally gave Jaina the energy to walk out of the small room and go outside to see the current situation of Theramore. The pain caused by the war cannot be eliminated for a short period of time, but people must live with new hope. As the ruler of Theramore, she should ask how the reconstruction work is going and whether all the wounded have been properly treated. However, Jaina believes that Sylvanas has handled everything. She is wearing a cloak and does not attract anyone's attention, and wants to find the figure of the Ranger General. Finally, she finds that the man stands on a complete wall and looks into the distance.
"What are you looking at?" When Jaina walked to Sylvanas, the keen ranger did not notice. What attracted her attention? Jaina was very curious.
"Are you awake?" Sylvanas looked at Jaina in surprise, and his solemn eyebrows finally relaxed.
Jaina took care of her hair with her hands and said with a smile: "I've been awake for several days, but I've been resting."
"Yes, I heard from Bene." General Ranger nodded, "I have put a lot of effort into sending Kenretto away during the days you have been resting."
"I did not see Kadega and the others. Have they left?"
"I left this morning." Sylvanas's gaze returned to the direction he had just looked. "They wanted to know the details of the teleportation process, so I could only deal with them with Theramo secret."
Jaina smiled pursed her lips, "If it is a secret, should its ruler be an insider?" She saw a trace of guilt flashing in Sylvanas's eyes. There was no doubt that the female ranger had something to hide from her.
"The drawings for the teleportation spell were given to me by someone."
"Who is it?" Jaina asked, but Sylvanas didn't answer. She guessed, "Your undead friend?"
She heard an irritated sigh, and Sylvanas turned to face her, trying to tell everything, while Jaina stood there and listened.
"I've seen him before, and that's what I longed for. I was very happy and excited. Especially when I heard him say he was here to help us fight the tribe, I personally felt that he had never left me."
Jaina's eyes slowly magnified, and despite her disrespect, she still asked: "Do you...love him?"
The female elf's face changed, and a blush appeared on her cheeks. She didn't know how to answer this question, so she could only curl her lips and said, "He loves my sister."
"Your sister?"
"It's not important, Jaina. What's important is that when he gave me the teleportation scroll, he only told me that Theramore would be teleported to a safe place. I believe him, and the fact is indeed right. This is where the Eastern Kingdom Dalaran once was. Our arrival has not caused any conflict except to disturb the magic elements here. It's just that I was wondering why he set the destination of the teleportation here." Sylvanas said endlessly, without paying attention to the shocked expression on Jaina's face. "After the incident of the Heavenly Trip Gate broke out, a dead unit called the Forgotten One is known to the world. They claim that their base camp is on Mount Altlan." She pointed to the shadow of the mountain that faintly appeared under the night sky. "We are very close to the Forgotten One's base camp. Why is this? Have you ever thought about it, Jaina..."
When Sylvanas noticed Jaina again, the female mage had no longer had the relaxed expression she had just now, and her eyes were full of doubt and suspicion.
"What's wrong?" she asked.
"Your undead...my friend, is your sister you love?"
The female elf was stunned.
"Your sister is Aurelia Windwalker. And her partner isn't..."
