Chapter 7 - Eredil
…………
Eridil remembers his responsibilities as a ranger. It takes a long way to go from Morning Star Village to Sun Well Highlands. He will carefully follow the mission guidelines every day and must not be careless. Silver Moon City will come to ask about his work every three days. Even the stupidest person knows the particularity of his mission. But sometimes he will laugh at himself and just give food to someone. What's so special about it?
There is a white marble-paved corridor outside the entrance of the Sun Well Highlands, and two long-distancers guarded each end. The entrance also has the same defense arrangement, and Eridil only needs to undergo their inspection. However, he doesn't like this process. The long-distancer responsible for the inspection has to open his lunch box package to check for poisons and whether there are hidden knives. During this period, Eridil could only wait patiently. What tormented was that his eyes would see the statue of Kelthas standing in the entrance passage of the highland from time to time. The prince seemed to have never left here. Eridil had vowed to be loyal to him, but was then heartbroken by his betrayal.
"Safe!" said the Ranger of the Far, "She is waiting for you."
"Bless the Well of the Sun," he said in his native language, saluting each other with the guards, taking the package and continuing to move forward.
In the past, many people questioned the decision of the Regent to allow Queldore, the Silver Covenant, to come for a pilgrimage. The organization belonged to the Alliance, which was the enemy of Quel'thalas. Eridil always thought this way, and it was not until later that he discovered that the elves who came to the Highlands of the Sunwell had no camps, and they all came to feel the blessings of the Sunwell. They had dinners, talked in the open space, and the atmosphere was harmonious, and their relationships were no longer enemies. This situation was unimaginable to Eridil, who realized that Dasrema's descendants had never been divided.
The deeper you go, the fewer elves you see. In addition to guarding, according to regulations, the number of people entering the Sun Well Tower must follow strict standards, and the same is true for staying time.
There was already a team of elves waiting in line, but Eridil would not join them. The person he was looking for was sitting in the rest courtyard at the moment, and of course, there were two female rangers waiting by her side at all times.
Aridil passed directly between them and came to the woman, unpacking the package in front of her: stewed bobcat meat, brown bread dipped in broth, and roasted vegetables sprinkled with honey.
The other party smiled at him and said, "Thank you."
No matter what she said, he would not respond, this is the rule.
"I like these foods very much." Leanda carefully picked up a piece of bread and nodded repeatedly when she ate it in her mouth.
"This smell reminds me of the hotel in Silver Moon City, where I used to date my male companion. The boss Verandra is my friend and she is happy to receive me because my expenses can often satisfy her monthly expenses." ...
Every time she ate, Leanda would roam a lot of things, most of which were her past events, and sometimes she would ask questions about Eridil's trivial matters. Although the Elf Ranger chose to answer in a silent manner, the woman's confused face would always turn into a certain satisfaction expression, as if she had gotten the answer from her own mouth, but Eridil swears that he didn't say a word.
"Before the Scourge invaded Quelthalas, my parents were preparing for my marriage. The other party was the son of a mage nobleman. This kind of political marriage is common, but after Arthas arrived, everything ended, and then Kelthus betrayed it completely. Have you ever had such a marriage?" Leanda looked at him curiously.
Eridil never expected that this Sun-Survivor woman would suddenly mention this matter, and felt as if she was punched in the stomach. Of course, he had someone he loved and was even engaged, but the deceased and the undead made everything that should have been beautiful and blew away forever, pulling away the fate between him and his fiancée.
For a moment, he forgot his responsibilities and couldn't help but want to speak. If it weren't for the Ranger behind him suddenly interrupting him, he might have vented this longing.
"Time is up." said the Ranger Guard.
Eridil was relieved and took a deep breath, watching Leanda being taken to the Well of the Sun. The female elf can enjoy an hour of pilgrimage every day. He wants to take away the leftover food of the woman. It will take over. If there is no mistake, he may continue to carry this boring job. There are rumors that more sun-catching people will come to Queldanas Island. As long as there is no accident...
"Aridiel?"
Just as he was busy with work, someone shouted behind him. Eredil turned around and was extremely surprised.
"Master Hadurun?" he bowed and paid tribute.
Hadurun Mingyi was responsible for the defense of the entire Sunwell Highlands. Judging from his duties, he was a busy man, and Eredil was just an inconspicuous existence among his soldiers. He really didn't know why Hadurun came to him, let alone why he knew his name.
"Someone wants to see you. Put down your work and follow me."
"Can I know who wants to see me, sir?"
The senior Ranger Commander stroked the long light blonde hair in front of his forehead and said with a serious expression: "It's the Regent." Eridil almost fell off his chin, of course, in Hadurun's expectation, so he continued: "For... a private matter."
Facing the senior leader of Quel'salas is something that Eredil is not good at.
When he was called, his first reaction was fear. He knew the importance of delivering food to Leanda Sun Chaser on a regular basis. Indeed, once or twice he was a few minutes late.
He was taken to the Tower of Sun Wrath - Hadurun was leading the way, then entered the political center of Silvermoon City under the gaze of a whole team of magic breakers. Finally, when Hadurun stopped in front of a lounge, he knew that the journey was over.
This is a spacious and simple room. The whole room is illuminated by candles. The ground is covered with thick and gorgeous embroidered carpets. There is a table and four chairs in the center of the room.
"The Regent will be here soon." Hadurun left after saying this, but his forehead was frowning and he looked worried when he left. Eredil didn't know why he left so in a hurry, and now it's not the time to think about this issue. The only thing in his mind was how to face Aurelia with a more calm attitude?
The chair in the room seemed to be waving to him, and after a long walk, he certainly wanted to sit down and rest, but he could not touch anything here without permission.
Aridil nervously raised his hand to wipe his forehead. He thought he would wait for a while. After all, the Regent had to deal with a lot of things every day. So for the rest of the time he had been calming down his complex mood. When he thought he was ready to meet the Regent, he realized that he was completely wrong!
"Are you Eredil?" A melodious voice sounded.
Eridil turned his head. He thought he would see a maid, but he found that it was Aurelia who was standing in front of him. Of course, it was impossible for him to be left alone by the supreme leader of Quel'thalas. A beautiful woman in blue and white armor stood beside the Regent. His sapphire eyes flashed with sharp eyes. The silver-white hair just echoed Aurelia's blonde hair. Behind them was a magician dressed in red turtlenecks.
"Your Highness!" Eridil's voice suddenly became stuttering because of his nervousness. "I'm honored to see you..."
The female elf who was not happy and unrestrained just nodded and pointed to a chair. "Sit down, thanks Hadurun for finding you and bringing you here."
Eridil rubbed against the chair and sat down, sweating was coming out of his palm. The Regent sat opposite him. The female elf and the magistrate who accompanied her also sat down.
The Wind Walker leader held his hands together, looked at Eridil, and looked at the ranger's appearance. The mage hugged his arms in front of his chest and leaned in the chair. Unlike the Regent, he seemed a little angry. Eridil knew him, Romans, the great magician who was difficult to contact, and one of the senior advisers of the Regent. After recognizing him, Eridil naturally realized that the silver-haired elf lady was the Regent's sister Wenleza, the Ranger General of Quel'thalas.
"I'm sorry I can't tell you the reason why you came here in advance. This fact is a bit subtle. I want to discuss it with you in person."
Eridil knew that his eyes must be wide open. But he didn't care whether he was acting properly. He swallowed hard, and was eager to know the reason why the Regent was looking for him.
"I heard you are a relative of the wizard Alona?"
"Yes, she is my cousin." Eridil wondered why Aurelia mentioned his sister. Could something happened to her sister? Or maybe the Regent borrowed the topic of his family to help him relieve his inner anxiety.
“Elona has been working on Sun-Chasing Island for many years, guiding the direction for the adventurers of Sindore.” The Regent continued, “I have heard of it that your family was also a nobleman of Quel'thalas, right?”
Eridil nodded, and the tension in his heart subsided for most of the time. His heart has been beating wildly since he sat down. Now his heartbeat has finally stabilized. It was just that the stare of the great magician kept making him feel uncomfortable. "Yes, but we are just rich in life. We are not a prominent family."
"I heard... your family once found a partner for you?"
This is the second time he remembered that past today. If the previous time was what Leanda said accidentally made him recall, then what was this time? The Regent was asking about my past - Eredil understood it.
"Yes, it's true. It's a woman who serves in the army. We've seen each other and we fell in love with each other. We originally planned to hold a wedding, but it didn't take long before Arthas came." At this point, he lowered his head and fell into silence.
"She's called Veronara, right? Do you think she's dead, right?"
Suddenly, Hope caught Eridil's heart. Why did the Regent find him with several prominent adults? He did not find Veronara's body on the trace of death. "She...is still alive?"
The Regent shook her head sadly. "It's not. She was indeed dead, and she died in the battle against Arthas, but death was not the end of her. She was resurrected, enslaved, and finally regained her freedom and became a Forsaken."
Veronara—his fiancée—became the Forsaken. Suddenly, Aridil began to tremble, thinking that the Regent had made a big joke. He hoped it was a joke.
Romans saw his reaction, and the mouth of the great magician hiding under the collar seemed to be laughing. "Look, I'm right. He just couldn't accept it. He felt that the world was crazy."
Eredil wanted to agree with Romans' words. He grabbed his trouser legs with both hands and pulled out a large fold with his powerful hands.
"Veronara is the hero guarding Quel'thalas," said Wenleza.
"Hero?" Eridil couldn't hide his trembling voice, "She has become a dead soul."
"She is not the undead we are for, not the Scourge." The Regent said. Romans looked even more annoyed. "You should have heard of the Forgotten Ones, at least they should know their names. They participated in the war against the Lich King."
Tears flashed in Aridil's eyes. "Yes," he said, "I've heard of it, Your Highness."
"So do you believe it?" Aurelia's tone meant to strike with the iron. "Veronara was still a...good person after her death. She still maintained her own nature after her transformation."
"This... feels impossible." Eridil murmured.
This sentence seemed to be Aurelia expected, but when it really emerged from Eridil's mouth, the Regent was still worried.
In desperation, Wenleza suddenly spoke: "If we knew that Veronara was still herself, but as a Forsaken, she was still your lover, but she might no longer have the beauty of the past. You still have the opportunity to be together, would you want to see her?"
Eridil couldn't believe his ears, and he opened his mouth slightly and looked at General Ranger. How should he answer?
"Be sure to answer this question." Romans's thick and high voice sounded again, as if he was refuting General Ranger, and as if adding to her words: "She may still be your fiancée, but she has no life, whether she is still rational or not. Her whole body is rotting, and there may even be bloody wounds exposed. Before becoming Forgotten, she was a member of the Scourge and might have committed unforgivable crimes without waking. Now she was standing in front of you with her cursed body, trying to complete the unwed wedding with you. Will you promise her? Can you accept the night of sleeping with a corpse?"
Wenleza wanted to scold Romans as soon as possible, but Aurelia held her back, and the Regent didn't like the words of the Great Magician. But she couldn't deny Romans. What's important is Eredil's attitude.
The Ranger Soldier felt cold all over and could not help but tremble. None of Romans' words painted a terrifying picture for him. He would only see a monster with fear. What was terrible was that the monster was supposed to spend his whole life with him. His mind kept thinking about Veronala's face before his death, and imagined her smiling. Then, the smile was lightly covered with grayish white, and then dark spots appeared. The dry folds of the skin were dehydrated and abscesses developed.
No, that's not Veronara. Eridil roared in his heart.
"No, I don't want to! I would rather she be dead and let her most beautiful appearance stay in my memory forever. Why tell me this? Why?"
