Chapter 24 - Remorse
…………
"I'm here, Aurelia."
The pair of smoldering scarlet eyes were walking through the darkness. Aurelia Wind Walker was trapped in this quiet and terrifying forest. She could feel the dead branches and leaves around her constantly cutting through her cheeks and skin, constantly rubbing against her delicate cloak.
Nathanos was nearby, and he was laughing at Aurelia.
The heavy black fog appeared at the boundary of Aurelia's sight at some point, constantly rolling around. The whole forest provided the best cover for Nathanos and also blocked her from approaching the target. However, Aurelia still did not give up hope. She insisted on jumping from one dead tree to another, and finally saw the afterimage of her husband's cloak in front of the blur. The female elf rushed up without hesitation.
When she was about to grab the broken cloak, her hand did not touch anything, but passed through the black cloak, and then her whole body was brought in by strange suction. The scene that appeared in front of her made Aurelia recall that important moment - when she came to Maris Farm again. Just like now, the ruins of the farm are her masterpiece of fire. There shouldn't be anyone here, but a figure kneeled in front of the ruins and lowered her head to meditate.
Aurelia did not get close to this guy at the first time, and her sensitivity as a ranger made her full of vigilance.
"What are you still rubbing against?" The voice came from the man's mouth, like a puppet thread, constantly controlling Aurelia's movements, forcing her to pull up the bow and arrow at her. It shocked the female elf and made her at a loss.
"Nathanos?" Aurelia murmured to herself. "You... are still alive."
Suddenly, Nathanos stood up and turned around and gave the impression that the moment he was resounding like thunder on the ground in Aurelia's mind. Is this what a dead soul should look like? The female elf tightened the bow and arrow's hand and slowly retracted its strength. Her face was intact, and her body was strong and upright. Her skin was pale and sheathed with traces of tears. He was fully armed, wearing a mixed armor of leather locks. The quiver behind him was full of arrows. A sheathed sword with a shiny shank at the end of the handle was hanging on his left waist.
When the corners of his mouth were raised, Aurelia's heart was already beating to her throat. This was Nathanos when he was most energetic, and he was also when he had experienced the baptism of war and became mature and steady. The female elf will not forget that it was at this time they came together. Why did he return to the scene? Why did she feel so upset? Is he still...
The coldness clasped Aurelia's body like cold claws, almost making her unable to breathe. She shook her head desperately and told herself that Nathanos was dead. The man in front of her was not the husband she knew. Those scarlet eyes were the best proof. No matter how much he looked like a living person, it was just a cover-up.
"What are you still rushing?"
"I won't hesitate because of memories!" Aurelia pulled her bow again and aimed at Nathanos' heart. Some of the sweat on her forehead invaded her hair, and some slipped down her cheeks. She admitted in her heart that she was lying. She hesitated, but to her surprise, her mood was also fear in addition to hesitation. Fear took away the sweet air around her little bit. Now every breath in her attempt made Aurelia feel like she was swallowing sharp and sharp glass fragments. Then, when a slight tingling sensation came from her cheeks, she realized that what was flowing on her face was not sweat, but tears. Tears poured out uncontrollably. "I should let you rest in peace, I have done this long ago. I will not neglect this time."
"Then what are you still rubbing against?" He still said the same thing, but there was a smile on the corner of his mouth. In the smile, Aurelia could only see confidence.
Why is he so calm? Did he firmly believe that my bow and arrow could not hit him?
"What are you still rushing?" Nathanos said again, with a dark tranquility in his tone, "What are you hesitating about?"
Aurelia bit her mouth and took two steps back. This action made Nathanos' eyes widen slightly. He also said more, but it sounded like asking and answering oneself.
"Don't leave me, Aurelia. No matter what happens, no matter what, don't leave me."
"I will never, Nathanos. I will never!"
"It seems no one can turn you down anything, Nathanos. I'm especially not."
"Shut up!" Aurelia roared. These words were like daggers, stirring up her body, injecting sadness into her blood, and engraving some sin in her heart.
She would not forget the promise she made between herself and Nathanos. She was sincere at that time. She thought about what happened in the past and she and Nathanos would not be the same person. But in the end, she made the opposite choice - she refused him because she wanted to give him rest.
As if knowing what she was thinking, Nathanos responded to her in a louder voice: "Then let me have a pain!"
The female elf's hands trembled, and she was a little surprised. This scene seemed familiar, from the darkest moment in her memory. Why did she experience it again?
"Vendel’o eranu. (Let me forget)" she said, not from her consciousness, but was destined to speak this Sarasian. Before Aurelia realized her mistake, the bow and arrow she had set up had shot...
The piercing pain made the female elf widen her eyes, and her body fell back like a broken kite. The arrow shot was obviously Nathanos, but she was the one who bears the pain.
"Aurelia."...
She heard a voice calling her, over and over again.
"How can you...abandon me?"
Did I abandon him?
"You treat me as a monster."
monster!
"You forgot whom I died for."
I have never forgotten.
I will not lose him! This oath is deeply engraved in her mind. He will not lose me either!
The guilt entangled Aurelia and lingered in her ears. She was responsible for her that extinguished the last glimmer of hope in Nathanos's heart, hope for the living.
No, it's not like this, it shouldn't be like this.
She heard the crying sound, it was she who was crying, crying for a long time. Is she really crying? Aurelia looked at the distant stars without blinking, and she really wanted to know the answer. Then... she closed her eyes and heard the last sentence before the world turned into darkness.
Vendel’o eranu.(Let me forget)
Nathanos, is this your way of punishing me?
Aurelia's inner sorrow was calmly accepting the sudden arrival of death. She could not feel the warmth or the cold. As the moment she slowly waited for the disappearance of consciousness, the conversation between the two people rang in her ears.
"We are surrounded!"
"Yes, I believe we have persisted for a long time, Silver Moon City must be ready. You can feel at ease, Aurelia?"
She heard Nathanos's voice, and he was talking to her. And her voice was also there.
"No, I'm not at ease yet. And you, Nathanos. You should leave here quickly. There are not many undead behind us, and you can break through the siege."
"And then throw you here? I won't leave you, Aurelia."
"This is my war, you know? It's my responsibility to protect my home, Nathanos. I don't want to see you splashing blood in Quel'thalas."
"Yes, Quel'thalas is not my home."
"So you go quickly, I love you!"
"Remember? My home is dead."
"I remember."
"I've lost some, so I won't make the same mistake again."
"But you stayed only to die with me."
"You can live, too."
"I won't be a deserter, and if I can't stop Alsace, I should die here."
"I understand. But only by living can you have hope."
"I can't..."
"Listen to me!"
"Nathanos, what are you going to do?"
"To keep you alive."
"No! Let go! I can't leave, I can't leave here and ignore..."
"Goodbye...Aurelia!"
"No!"
Aurelia's eyes suddenly opened, and she found herself on a battlefield, and two people appeared in the hazy sight. One collapsed to the ground, supporting herself with only one arm, and the other rode an evil skeleton horse.
"No." She murmured. This was a scene she could not witness but never wanted to see.
The skeleton horse roared and rushed towards the helpless man. The rune giant sword cut through the air. The man used his last strength to face the deadly sword front and wanted to block it with his own weapon, but they were shattered at the moment of impact. The rune sword pierced him.
"No!"
Nathanos let out a whimper. The short hoarseness filled with regret. Aurelia fell to the ground in despair. She was so far away from the two of them that she could hear the last whisper of the person who had passed by life quickly.
"Aleria...forgive me."
The female elf sobbed, the painful memories she should have remembered, the tragic past she had never witnessed appeared in front of her. What was even more terrifying was that she could not stop the next scene.
"After the command of the Lich King, stand up again and become a warrior of the Scourge. Azeroth will fall into chaos in your hands! Go towards destruction!" Frost's sorrow buzzed, singing the oldest spell...
...The world seemed to be covered by a black curtain in a flash. Aurelia could not see anything except darkness. There was no noise and nothing. This darkness was not terrible, it was soft, warm, calm and comfortable. Over time, the female elf even had the idea of staying here, which allowed her to put down her arms that raised the people and the kingdom.
"Nathanos?" She opened her eyes wide and looked at the only light in the darkness, shining on her husband. He sat there barefoot with barefoot and eyes. To Aurelia's surprise, she saw that Nathanos' eyes were still bright and deep.
"Nathanos!" Aurelia ran towards him excitedly, but found that each step she took not only failed to get closer, but instead made her farther and farther away from the human. The female elf stopped to prevent this from happening. "Nathanos!" she called again, asking her lover to respond to her, even if she looked up at her.
But he didn't. Nathanos seemed to have lost his soul and his eyes were empty. Even when three winged guys suddenly appeared beside him, he didn't react.
Fear pierced into Aurelia's nerves like a sword. The three huge figures were covered with black skeleton armor. They were very similar to Wagri but not Wagri. They were even more terrifying beings. They were the incarnations of death.
Death surrounds humans, whispering, narrating, traction of his soul. Under Aurelia's gaze, Nathanos's originally healthy skin lost its luster, and blood and tears flowed out of his eyes and soaked his pupils.
"No, no!" Aurelia roared, and was about to rush over to the organization, but her back was suddenly hit and knocked to the ground. She could not stop it. Nathanos gradually became conscious, his face twisted, his eyes ignited anger. His body floated uncontrollably. The spells of the three black-armored monsters never stopped, and each word brought unimaginable pain to Nathanos. He was torn apart, but he did not make a shrill cry. Aurelia admired her husband's tenacity, and she could not imagine what kind of torture it was.
But she was wrong, and she immediately realized that she was wrong. Nathanos was not patient, but pain was swelling inside him, bursting out of his lips in the form of a sound.
Aurelia only felt her blood boiling, her heartbeat and pulse was faster than she could bear. This deep and tragic wail actually came from a person's pain.
"Nathanos!"
Humans ignored her desperate call, and stared at the darkness ahead. The skin was white and broken, and the red light emitted in their eyes became the only color in this dark realm.
But Aurelia still had not compromised. She shouted his name frantically, trying to change it before he and the darkness were completely integrated, but even this last chance had disappeared. In the extreme pain, she saw Nathanos heading towards the end of the darkness and towards the death knight who corrupted him. Then, he knelt down on one knee and said, "For you, Your Highness, Prince."
"don't want!"
Aurelia screamed, and then she woke up in her scream. She tried hard to grab something with one hand, but the palm of her hand felt the cold wind blowing. The armor on her body disappeared, replaced by a loose nightgown. The bedding brought her warmth. Aurelia finally woke up from the terrifying dream.
"Her Excellency Regent?" Maleya, the maid in charge of her daily life, rushed into her bedroom and said with a worried expression: "I heard your voice."
The fear in the nightmare instantly turned into clouds. Aurelia believed that she could see that she had a nightmare and said without making any defense: "I'm fine, you go down."
"I'm outside, call me any time if you have any questions." The maid bowed and stepped back.
When she was left with only herself, Fengxingzhe could no longer hide her emotions. She burst into tears, covered her head on her knees and chest, and asked herself: "What did I do and what did I do!"
